Edinburgh, Scotland — July 26, 2025. The private visit of U.S. President Donald Trump to Scotland has sparked widespread protests across the country, adding a new layer of political tension between the Republican leader and British civil society.
Mass Demonstrations in Edinburgh and Aberdeen Over 1,500 people gathered outside the U.S. consulate in Edinburgh, just steps from the Scottish Parliament, in a rally organized by the Stop Trump coalition. The group includes labor unions, feminist collectives, climate activists, and pro-Palestinian organizations. Protesters held signs reading “Trump is not welcome,” “Make America Think Again,” “Stop
Trump,” and “Donald Trump is a dictator,” alongside Palestinian flags and references to the Epstein scandal.
Creative and Symbolic Protest Some demonstrators wore satirical costumes, including a woman dressed as a character from The Handmaid’s Tale, referencing the dystopian series that critiques authoritarianism and gender oppression. In Aberdeen,
dozens gathered near the statue of William Wallace, where climate activists, trans rights advocates, and Green Party MP Maggie Chapman delivered speeches condemning Trump’s presence.
Golf, Diplomacy, and Controversy While protests unfolded, Trump was spotted playing golf at his luxury resort Trump Turnberry, escorted by the Secret Service. During his stay, he is scheduled to meet with
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss a trade agreement that would lower tariffs to 15%. Meetings with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Scottish First Minister John Swinney are also expected.
Political and Social Reactions Jack Nevin, organizer of Stop Trump, stated: “Calling this a personal visit stretches the term beyond reason.” Louise Brown, a protester from Newcastle, called Trump “a convicted criminal who disrespects women’s rights.” Salomé Serrano, a Venezuelan resident in Scotland, added: “Trump has created an unstable and arbitrary system that punishes immigrants.”
Public Spending and Criticism of Scottish Government The Scottish government, led by Swinney, faced backlash for allocating public funds to the upcoming Nexo Championship 2025, set to take place at Trump’s Aberdeen golf course. MP Chapman declared: “We stand in solidarity not just against Trump, but against everything he and his policies represent.”
Upcoming Events Trump is expected to return to the UK in September for a second state visit, invited by King Charles III. Civil organizations have already announced new mobilizations for that occasion.
