Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Saturday that federal agents will be withdrawn from demonstrations in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and other Democratic‑led cities, though he pledged that federal property will continue to be guarded “with great firmness.”

The decision comes amid nationwide outrage following the deaths of two protesters, Renée Good and Alex Pretti, both 37, who were fatally shot by immigration agents during rallies against federal immigration raids in Minneapolis.

“I have instructed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that under no circumstances will we participate in protests or riots in poorly managed Democratic cities unless our assistance is formally requested,” Trump declared on his social media platform, Truth.

By shifting responsibility to state and local governments, the president emphasized that they must ensure public safety and respond to any unrest. At the same time, he vowed that federal officers will defend government facilities against what he described as “lunatics, agitators, and paid insurrectionists.”

Warning Against Attacks on Officers

Trump also issued stern warnings against assaults on federal personnel. “Spitting in the faces of our officers, punching or kicking the headlights of our vehicles, or throwing stones and bricks at our Patriots will not be tolerated. Those who engage in such acts will face equal or greater consequences,” he said.

Background: Operation Metro Surge

The controversy stems from Metro Surge, a federal initiative launched in December to arrest undocumented migrants in Minnesota. The aggressive raids, carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), have been widely condemned by local officials and thousands of demonstrators demanding the removal of federal agents from the state.

In response to escalating tensions, Trump recently reassigned operational command to his border czar, Tom Homan, with the stated goal of achieving “de‑escalation.” However, the president has made clear that immigration raids will continue despite public backlash.
