China Raises Tariffs on U.S. Goods to 125% and Sends a Clear Message: No Further Escalation, But No Retreat Either
In a move that sends shockwaves through the global trade landscape, China announced on Friday an unprecedented hike in tariffs on all imports from the United States, raising duties from 84% to a staggering 125%. The measure, set to take effect on April 12, comes as a direct response to Washington's latest round of trade levies.
The announcement was made through an official statement by the Tariff Policy Commission of the State Council, in which Beijing strongly condemned the U.S. trade strategy, calling it a “severe violation of international economic norms” and a clear example of “unilateral bullying and coercion.”
“The U.S. government has trampled the very global trade order it helped build after World War II,” the statement reads. “China will not remain passive in the face of such aggression. If Washington insists on harming our core interests, we will respond resolutely—and see it through to the end.”
Despite the tough rhetoric, Chinese authorities noted that U.S. products have already been effectively priced out of the Chinese market due to the current tariff levels. As such, any further increases would be economically meaningless, “irrelevant,” and, as the statement puts it, “will go down as a mockery in the history of global economics.”
This latest salvo in the trade war comes just two days after Beijing raised tariffs from 34% to 84% on American goods, retaliating against a 50% tariff hike previously imposed by former President Donald Trump on Chinese imports. Washington then escalated further, bringing the cumulative tax burden on Chinese goods to 145%.
Speaking on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian delivered a message that was both assertive and diplomatic: “China does not seek a trade war—but we are not afraid of one. If the United States truly wishes to resolve tensions through dialogue, it must first abandon its pressure tactics.”
Lin emphasized that China's countermeasures are not only about defending its legitimate interests, but also about “safeguarding the international order and the rights of all nations affected by U.S. unilateralism.”
Beijing has firmly warned that it will not accept unequal conditions in any future negotiations, stressing that all dialogue must be founded on mutual respect, equality, and reciprocity.
