Blue Origin Announces Plans for Its Most Powerful Rocket Yet, Moving Closer to SpaceX.

Blue Origin, the space company founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, announced Thursday plans to build a super-heavy rocket, the New Glenn 9×4, which will feature greater power and payload capacity, bringing the company closer to SpaceX’s Starship, its main competitor in the race for space dominance.
“The New Glenn 9×4, named after the number of engines in each stage, is designed for missions requiring higher capacity and performance,” the company said in a statement.
According to Blue Origin, the future vehicle will be capable of carrying over 70 metric tons to low Earth orbit (LEO), more than 14 metric tons directly to geosynchronous orbit (GEO), and over 20 metric tons for translunar injection.
This represents a significant improvement over the current second-generation New Glenn, a reusable two-stage rocket capable of transporting 45 metric tons to LEO and more than 13 metric tons to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).
Blue Origin did not disclose development timelines for the New Glenn 9×4, but noted that the rocket will include upgrades “designed to increase payload performance and launch frequency, as well as improve reliability.”
Planned innovations include:
Higher-performance engines for both the first and upper stages
A reusable payload fairing to boost flight cadence
A new, lower-cost tank design
An advanced reusable thermal protection system.
The Race Between Blue Origin and SpaceX
The New Glenn 9×4 will bring Blue Origin closer to the power of SpaceX’s Starship, currently the most powerful rocket in the world, capable of carrying between 100 and 150 metric tons to orbit.
However, the New Glenn 9×4’s performance will remain closer to SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy, which stands 70 meters tall, measures 12 meters in diameter, and can deliver 63.8 metric tons to LEO, than to the Starship.
NASA Context and Artemis III
The announcement comes amid growing skepticism about SpaceX’s timeline for Artemis III, NASA’s mission intended to return humans to the Moon for the first time since 1972.
SpaceX was awarded the contract to supply the lunar lander, but NASA’s acting administrator Sean Duffy recently warned of delays, suggesting the U.S. government may open the contract to other companies. Blue Origin’s advancements could position it as a viable alternative.
Recent Milestone
Last week, Blue Origin successfully recovered the first stage of the New Glenn for the first time, landing it on a maritime platform. Until now, only SpaceX had achieved this milestone, marking a major step forward in Blue Origin’s reusability program.
