New York, NY (July 25,2025) — Brooklyn rap star J.I the Prince returns with one of his most anticipated and personal releases to date: “Cherry Red 150” — a raw, emotional, and powerful track paying homage to one of hip hop’s greatest icons, Big Pun.
This release is more than just a single. Years in the making, “Cherry Red 150” holds deep significance for J.I, who grew up admiring Pun’s lyricism and legacy. After crafting a tribute that felt both honest and respectful, J.I received the official blessing from Big Pun’s wife and son, who cleared the use of the reference and fully supported the tribute.
“Cherry Red 150” is a lyrical confessional — filled with reflection, survival, and growth. Over a brooding, melodic beat, J.I explores the pressures of fame, loyalty, and betrayal, while channeling the influence of Big Pun’s storytelling and street poetry. With lines like “R-I-P I did this shit for P-U-N / Guide me to your heart, give me the keys and let me in,” the track is both a nod to Pun’s legacy and a window into J.I’s own journey — navigating success, loyalty, betrayal, and survival.
Set against a haunting beat, “Cherry Red 150” dives deep into the contradictions of fame, brotherhood, and vulnerability. J.I. reflects on his roots in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and the constant pressure of being in the public eye:
“I gotta fix my doors cause everybody knocking me / I gotta watch everything, everybody clocking me.”
The track’s title refers to a cherry-red Ford 150 — a symbol of mobility, power, and presence. But underneath the flash is a story about trust, trauma, and triumph.
“You not gon catch me in this cherry red 150 / If I’m on the freeway pushing 150 / Don’t run up on me, I got my gun with me.”
“Cherry Red 150” also marks a musical evolution for J.I — weaving melodic flow with gritty bars and storytelling that’s both cinematic and confessional. The song credits J.I’s core team, including his family, manager, and brothers, and closes on a vulnerable note, asking for forgiveness and understanding:
J.I delivers a standout single with “Cherry Red 150,” that not only pays homage to Big Pun’s legacy, but also marks a pivotal chapter in his own story as one of the most emotionally resonant voices of the new generation. J.I. continues to build on his legacy as one of Brooklyn’s most compelling exports, channeling classic East Coast energy while carving out his own lane.
Cherry Red 150” is out now. Stream the song and watch the official video on J.I’s YouTube channel.
