Rome, Saturday – In a high-stakes diplomatic turn, Presidents Donald Trump (U.S.) and Volodymyr Zelensky (Ukraine) held a strategic meeting this Saturday in the Italian capital, just before attending the solemn funeral of Pope Francis.

A Key Meeting at a Critical Moment

Ukrainian spokesperson Sergii Nykyforov confirmed to state news agency Ukrinform that the private meeting between the two leaders took place in Vatican City and lasted approximately 15 minutes. During their conversation, Trump and Zelensky agreed to continue discussions later that same day, focusing on international efforts toward peace in Ukraine.

“It was a very productive meeting,” stated Steven Cheung, White House Director of Communications, emphasizing the constructive tone of the dialogue.

Macron and Starmer Join the Global Conversation

Shortly afterward, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined the gathering, forming a high-level quartet. According to sources from the Élysée Palace, the discussion was “positive and focused on the situation in Ukraine.” No further details or duration of this historic four-way meeting were disclosed.

State Funeral: A Stage for Global Diplomacy

Rome has become the epicenter of an unprecedented gathering of world leaders. The state funeral of Pope Francis brings together 140 international delegations, including 50 heads of state and government and over a dozen monarchs, all present in the majestic St. Peter’s Square.

Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Rome this morning accompanied by First Lady Olena Zelenska, while Donald Trump and Melania Trump landed in the Italian capital the night before.
