ICE Arrests Woman with Family Ties to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt

A woman with family connections to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is in ICE custody after being arrested earlier this month near Boston.

Bruna Caroline Ferreira, a native of Brazil and mother of Leavitt’s nephew, was detained in Revere, Massachusetts, on November 12, 2025, according to her attorney, Todd Pomerleau, who spoke to CNN.

Leavitt’s nephew has lived full-time in New Hampshire with his father, Michael Leavitt—Karoline’s brother—since birth, a source familiar with the situation told CNN. The source added that Ferreira and the White House press secretary have not spoken in many years.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told CNN that Ferreira had overstayed her tourist visa, which required her to leave the United States in June 1999. The spokesperson described her as an “illegal immigrant criminal from Brazil” with “a prior arrest for assault” and confirmed she is currently in deportation proceedings.

Pomerleau disputed the DHS characterization, stating: “We refute that she has a criminal record. She is not an ‘illegal immigrant criminal.’”

The attorney explained that Ferreira was a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which provides temporary protection from deportation for individuals brought to the U.S. as children. He noted that she was unable to renew her status during former President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the program in his first administration. Ferreira is now engaged in a legal immigration process to obtain U.S. citizenship, Pomerleau said.
