U.S. President Donald J. Trump was formally received by King Charles III at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, marking the official start of his second State Visit to the United Kingdom. The visit, rich in symbolism and protocol, aims to reinforce the historic “special relationship” between London and Washington amid global geopolitical challenges and trade tensions.

Air Force One landed at Stansted Airport on Tuesday, September 16, at 9:08 p.m. local time (8:08 p.m. GMT). President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were greeted by Viscount Henry Hood on behalf of the monarch, alongside Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. The presidential couple then traveled via Marine One to Winfield House, the official residence of the U.S. ambassador in London.

The official welcoming ceremony took place in the gardens of Windsor Castle, where King Charles III and Queen Camilla greeted the Trumps at Victoria House. Joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Catherine, the dignitaries participated in a carriage procession escorted by the Household Cavalry Mounted

Regiment. The King and President rode in the Irish State Coach, while Camilla and Melania traveled in the Scottish State Coach.

During the ceremony, the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired 41-gun salutes using World War I-era cannons, as the national anthems of both countries played. A military honor guard conducted a formal inspection in the castle’s quadrangle, involving over 1,300 personnel from the British Armed Forces.

The day’s agenda included a private lunch between the royal and presidential couples, a visit to Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb at St. George’s Chapel, and a State Banquet attended by more than 150 guests. At the banquet, President Trump presented King Charles with a replica of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s ceremonial sword, honoring the Anglo-American alliance during World War II.

However, the visit has not been without controversy. Activist group “Led By Donkeys” projected images of Trump alongside convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein onto one of the castle’s towers, resulting in the arrest of four individuals for “malicious communications,” according to Thames Valley Police.

On Thursday, Trump is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, where discussions will focus on sensitive issues such as tariffs on British whisky and steel, as well as cooperation in defense and technology.

This visit represents a delicate diplomatic balancing act for the British government, which seeks to uphold institutional respect while navigating domestic criticism of the U.S. president. With protests planned across London and a security deployment of over 1,600 officers, the United Kingdom braces for two days of high-stakes diplomacy under global scrutiny.
