Miami, FL — Miami Dade College (MDC), Florida’s largest public university, voted unanimously on Tuesday to once again approve the transfer of a prime public lot valued at more than $300 million for the construction of former President Donald Trump’s official presidential library.
The Board of Trustees endorsed the donation of a 2.63-acre parcel (about 10,650 square meters) adjacent to the historic Freedom Tower in downtown Miami. The decision followed a four-hour session marked by heated debate, in which activists denounced the project as excessive and an “insult” to immigrants.
Legal Background
The board had already approved the transfer on September 23, 2025, but was forced to redo the vote after a lawsuit filed by local historian Marvin Dunn, who accused MDC of violating Florida’s Sunshine Law by failing to give proper public notice.
The new vote, 8–0, is intended to shield the college from litigation, though Dunn vowed to continue his legal fight. A judge has scheduled a hearing for August 3, 2026.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has sided with MDC in the dispute.
Reactions
Dunn declared during the session: “No president should be given this land. If they think this sham meeting will end my lawsuit, they are wrong. We’re just getting started.”
Activists complained that the meeting was not livestreamed, unlike previous sessions, and that public comment was restricted.
Civil groups such as The Miami Freedom Project argue the donation is a misuse of taxpayer assets and a symbolic affront, since the Freedom Tower historically welcomed Cuban refugees fleeing Fidel Castro’s regime.
A Bendixen & Amandi International poll conducted in November 2024 found that 74% of Miami-Dade voters oppose the land transfer.
Supporters’ View
Proponents highlight that this would be the first presidential library in Florida, home to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate since he changed his residence from New York in 2019.
Evan Power, chairman of the Florida Republican Party, praised the project: “Having President Trump’s presidential library in Miami is an honor. It will strengthen the city by boosting tourism, driving economic development, and offering valuable historical and educational resources.”
The Trump Presidential Library Foundation, led by Eric Trump, is expected to oversee the project, which supporters say could become a major tourist attraction.
Symbolism of the Site
The Freedom Tower, a National Historic Landmark, processed thousands of Cuban exiles in the 1960s and 1970s. Critics argue that placing Trump’s library—given his hardline immigration policies—next to this monument undermines its legacy.
