Residents of Minneapolis, Minnesota, held vigils on Tuesday to honor Alex Pretti, who was fatally shot on Saturday by federal immigration agents, while demanding justice after the announcement that controversial Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino will no longer lead operations in the city.
“Bovino’s departure is a big step toward de-escalating the violence, but the community is convinced we must remain in the streets. The protests will not stop. It’s no longer enough for them to leave—we want justice,” said Evan Freese, a local teacher who lives four blocks from the intersection in south Minneapolis where Pretti was killed.
Pretti’s death—the second of a demonstrator during protests against immigration raids in Minneapolis, following the killing of Renée Good on January 7—has sparked a wave of outrage across the country and forced the White House to adjust its strategy.
On Monday, President Donald Trump announced the deployment of his “border czar,” Tom Homan, to replace Bovino, who had become the face of aggressive raids in the city and of the crackdown on demonstrators opposing those operations.
Honoring the Victims
Freese tends to the altar erected in Pretti’s memory and helps coordinate coffee and food donations for volunteers who remain in the streets despite extreme temperatures that have dropped to –26°C (–14°F) this week.
“ICE’s actions in the city spiraled out of control in a way that deeply wounds us. All we can do now is honor the lives of our neighbors who were killed with visible actions in the streets—the very presence the government wants to erase,” he added.
Other residents gathered around the altar said that numerous social organizations are calling for a mass mobilization in Minneapolis this Friday afternoon.
Judicial Pressure
Federal Judge Patrick Shilitz of Minnesota has summoned acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to explain why the agency has failed to comply with court orders regarding detained immigrants. The judge warned that ICE could face contempt proceedings.
Meanwhile, Minneapolis awaits the withdrawal of federal immigration agents.
White House Response
The administration softened its tone on Monday after several Trump officials had labeled Pretti a “terrorist” over the weekend and accused him of attempting to use a weapon against agents. However, video evidence shows Pretti was shot in the back while unarmed, contradicting the government’s initial claims.
