Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Border Czar Tom Homan will oversee the deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to U.S. airports beginning Monday. The move comes as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) faces severe staffing shortages linked to the ongoing partial government shutdown.
In an interview with CNN’s State of the Union with Dana Bash, Homan explained that ICE agents will assist with security operations at airport checkpoints to ease the burden on TSA officers and help maintain passenger flow. “This is about helping TSA fulfill its mission and ensuring the American public gets through airports as quickly as possible, while respecting all safety protocols,” Homan said.
Key Facts
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that more than 400 TSA officers have resigned since the shutdown began.
Union leaders report that many TSA employees have taken unscheduled leave, citing financial hardship such as the inability to pay for gas or childcare.
Wait times at major airports have stretched to three hours or more, creating significant disruptions for travelers.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that a prolonged shutdown could trigger further resignations and absences, worsening delays nationwide.
Deployment Strategy
Homan emphasized that ICE agents will be concentrated at airports experiencing the longest delays, prioritizing major hubs with heavy passenger traffic. The deployment is intended as a temporary support measure, not a replacement for TSA’s core responsibilities.
Context
The TSA has been one of the hardest-hit agencies during the partial government shutdown, with thousands of employees working without pay. The staffing crisis has raised concerns about both national security and the stability of air travel, prompting the administration to take extraordinary steps to maintain operational continuity.
This development underscores the growing strain on federal agencies tasked with safeguarding U.S. transportation systems, as the shutdown continues to ripple across critical infrastructure.
