The world of heavy metal mourns a legend. This Tuesday, July 22, Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic frontman of Black Sabbath and cornerstone of the genre, passed away at age 76—just weeks after his historic farewell concert in Birmingham.
A monumental send-off: “Back to the Beginning”
On July 5, Ozzy performed his final show at Villa Park stadium in his hometown. Seated on a gothic throne, he sang five solo classics, ending with “Crazy Train” before reuniting with the original Black Sabbath lineup to close with “Paranoid.” The global livestream of Back to the Beginning featured legendary acts like Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, and Slayer, with many fans hailing it as “the greatest heavy metal concert of all time.”
A life of darkness, brilliance, and controversy
Born John Michael Osbourne in Aston, Birmingham, in 1948, Ozzy became the soul of Black Sabbath, pioneering the heavy metal sound with albums like Paranoid, Master of Reality, and Black Sabbath. His haunting voice and unpredictable stage presence defined dark metal.
After leaving the band in 1979, Ozzy launched a powerful solo career, fueled by the genius of guitarist Randy Rhoads. Tracks like “Mr. Crowley” and “Suicide Solution” became genre-defining anthems.
His journey was turbulent—rife with addiction, scandal, and bizarre moments like the infamous bat incident of 1982—but fans connected deeply to his raw authenticity. In the 2000s, he surprised the world as the star of The Osbournes, offering a glimpse into his heartfelt, chaotic family life.
An immortal legacy
Ozzy leaves behind a monumental impact: over a dozen solo albums, multiple Grammy Awards, dual inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a solo artist and with Black Sabbath), and the creation of Ozzfest, which catapulted emerging metal acts to stardom.
His final project, the documentary film Back to the Beginning: Ozzy’s Final Bow, is set to premiere in 2026.
Rest in power, Ozzy. Your roar will echo in every riff forever.
