BREAKING NEWS: President Trump Diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency Following Leg Swelling

Washington, D.C. — July 17, 2025 President Donald J. Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a common vascular condition affecting blood flow in the legs, following recent concerns over visible swelling in his lower extremities, the White House confirmed Thursday

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the media during a briefing, reading from a physician’s note that detailed the president’s medical evaluation. Trump, 79, underwent a comprehensive diagnostic workup—including bilateral venous Doppler ultrasounds and vascular studies—after noticing mild swelling in his legs.

Medical Findings and Prognosis According to the White House physician, Capt. Sean Barbabella, the tests ruled out more serious conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, arterial disease, heart failure, or systemic illness. “The president remains in excellent health,” Leavitt emphasized.

CVI occurs when the valves in the leg veins fail to function properly, causing blood to pool and leading to symptoms such as swelling, aching, and skin changes. Experts note that the condition is common in older adults and is typically not life-threatening.

Risk Factors and Management Medical professionals cite age, genetics, obesity, and prolonged periods of sitting or standing as contributing factors. Trump’s physician did not disclose a specific treatment plan, but standard management includes compression therapy, leg elevation, and regular exercise.

Public Speculation and Transparency The diagnosis follows public speculation after photos from the Club World Cup final in New Jersey showed Trump with visibly swollen ankles. Minor bruising on his hands was also noted, attributed to frequent handshaking and routine aspirin use.

Political Implications While the condition is not expected to impact the president’s ability to perform his duties, the disclosure comes amid heightened scrutiny of candidates’ health as the 2026 election cycle intensifies. The White House’s transparency reflects growing public demand for clarity regarding the health of aging political leaders.
