Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Friday that he plans to file a multibillion-dollar lawsuit against the BBC next week, after the British broadcaster admitted to an editing error in one of his speeches related to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“We’re going to demand an amount between $1 billion and $5 billion,” Trump told reporters traveling with him aboard Air Force One before departing Washington for Florida. The president added, “I have to do it,” noting that the legal action could be filed as early as next week.

The controversy stems from the BBC’s flagship program Panorama, which used what the network later acknowledged was a “misleading edit” of Trump’s January 6 speech. The broadcast spliced together excerpts from different moments, altering the original context.

Trump’s legal team argues that the edit omitted a crucial line in which he urged supporters to march “peacefully and patriotically” to the Capitol. They claim the omission damaged his reputation by linking him more directly to the violence that unfolded that day.

The BBC has issued an apology, calling the incident an “error of judgment.” However, the broadcaster maintains that there is no legal basis for a defamation claim, given the circumstances surrounding January 6.

Political and Media Implications

The threat of a lawsuit adds to Trump’s long-standing clashes with major media outlets, both domestic and international. If filed, the case could become one of the most expensive legal battles ever initiated by a sitting U.S. president against a foreign broadcaster, with damages sought ranging from $1 billion to $5 billion.
