Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump confirmed Sunday that the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will shut down for approximately two years to undergo extensive renovations. The decision marks a dramatic pause for the nation’s premier cultural institution, which has already been grappling with widespread cancellations and an unprecedented internal crisis.
Trump, who has made the overhaul of the Washington landmark a priority in his second term, emphasized that the closure—scheduled to begin July 4—will accelerate the transformation of the complex. “This important decision, based on the advice of many highly respected experts, will turn a tired, deteriorated, and crumbling center into a world-class bastion of the arts, music, and entertainment,” Trump said in a statement on social media, adding that funding for the project is “fully secured.”
The Kennedy Center’s governing board, chaired by Trump himself, must still approve the measure. In December, the board—appointed largely by the president—added Trump’s name to the building, a move that triggered a wave of cancellations from artists who objected to the change.
Trump argued that the temporary closure would deliver “a faster and higher-quality result” as crews work to rebuild the facility. The renovations are expected to address both structural and financial challenges that have plagued the center for years.
If approved, the shutdown will mark one of the most sweeping interruptions in the Kennedy Center’s history, reshaping the cultural landscape of the capital and leaving audiences without performances until the reopening.
