Trump Bids Farewell to Elon Musk, Calling Him One of the World’s Greatest Innovators.

Washington D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump held an official ceremony on Friday to bid farewell to tech magnate Elon Musk, who is stepping down from his role in the federal government. In his remarks, Trump praised Musk as "one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever seen."

“He volunteered to put his remarkable talent in service of our nation, and we are deeply grateful,” Trump said during the event in the Oval Office. “Elon has worked tirelessly, helping lead the most radical and consequential government reform program in generations.”

Musk had been leading the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a temporary federal initiative aimed at reducing government waste and modernizing outdated systems.

“Elon isn’t really leaving,” Trump added. “He’ll be in and out. I have the feeling DOGE is his baby, and he’ll continue to be involved. His service to the United States has been unmatched in modern history.”

To honor his contributions, Trump presented Musk with a ceremonial key, thanking him for his efforts. “Under Elon’s leadership, DOGE has helped uncover fraud, cut wasteful spending, and overhaul outdated federal infrastructure. We’ve uncovered some incredibly foolish and dysfunctional practices, and Elon brought about a massive shift in how things are done in Washington.”

Trump praised DOGE’s success in placing “engineer-minded geniuses and exceptionally talented people in key positions,” reshaping how federal agencies operate.

Musk: "This Is Not the End of DOGE"

During the joint press conference, Musk confirmed that he is stepping down from his temporary government role as his 130-day contract concludes. However, he emphasized that his involvement with the administration isn’t over.

“I’ll continue visiting and remain a friend and advisor to the President. I look forward to being back in this incredible room,” Musk said from the Oval Office.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO described DOGE as more than just a government department, likening it to “a form of life — almost like Buddhism.”

Musk noted that under his leadership, DOGE initiatives have resulted in $160 billion in federal savings, with projections soon reaching $200 billion. The agency has overseen major budget cuts across several federal departments, as reflected in Trump’s proposed fiscal plans, and closed multiple agencies — reportedly saving another $175 billion, according to DOGE’s official website.

Trump on Tariffs: "Without Them, America Would Be in Danger"

During the same event, Trump commented on a recent legal victory regarding his administration's tariff policy. A federal appeals court temporarily reinstated the tariffs after they had been blocked by a lower court.

“Tariffs are crucial. That’s why we’re so pleased with yesterday’s decision to keep them in place — without them, our nation would be at risk,” Trump declared.

The ruling was a key win for the White House as it continues trade negotiations. “Without these tariffs, the United States would lose trillions of dollars. It would be the harshest financial blow ever inflicted on us as a sovereign nation. The President must have the power to protect America from economic harm,” Trump emphasized.

Trump: Israel and Hamas “Very Close” to Gaza Ceasefire

In a final note during the press briefing, Trump revealed that Israel and Hamas are nearing a temporary ceasefire agreement in Gaza, based on a proposal presented by his administration.

“They’re very close to a deal, and we’ll update you later today or tomorrow,” Trump said.

The plan, developed by U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, has Israeli backing but faces resistance from Hamas, which claims the proposal fails to meet “any just and legitimate demands” of the Palestinian people.

Trump also suggested a new opportunity for progress with Iran: “There’s a real chance for a nuclear agreement. If we can reach a deal without bombs flying across the Middle East, that would be a tremendous achievement,” he said.

“We want Iran to be a great nation — but they cannot have a nuclear weapon. It’s that simple. And I think we’re getting very close to an agreement.”
