President Donald Trump on Thursday demanded the arrest and prosecution of six Democratic lawmakers who released a video urging the U.S. military to disobey “illegal orders” issued by the commander in chief. Trump denounced their actions as sedition, a crime he said is punishable by death.
The video released Wednesday features six Democratic legislators emphasizing that members of the armed forces are sworn to “defend the Constitution” and must refuse “illegal orders,” even if they come directly from Trump. The lawmakers did not specify which orders they considered unlawful.
Since returning to power in January 2025, Trump has ordered military deployments in several Democrat-led cities to quell what he described as uncontrolled unrest backed by the “radical left.” Federal courts have blocked these deployments, ruling them invalid.
Trump’s Statements
“This is seditious conduct of the highest order. Each of these traitors must be arrested and prosecuted. We cannot allow their words to go unpunished—we will lose our country! We must set an example!” Trump wrote in his first post on Truth Social.
In a second message, he added: “This is truly grave and dangerous for our nation. Seditious conduct by traitors. Should they be jailed?!”
Finally, he declared: “Seditious conduct, punishable by death!”

White House Response
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt denied that Trump intends to “execute” members of Congress, but strongly condemned the video, calling it a “very dangerous message” that could be subject to legal consequences.
“The integrity of our Armed Forces depends on the chain of command. If that chain is broken, it can cause deaths and chaos. That is precisely what these lawmakers—who swore to uphold the Constitution—are encouraging,” Leavitt said.
She insisted that Trump has not issued any illegal orders, stressing: “Every order given by the Commander in Chief through the chain of command and the Secretary of War is legal. The courts have shown this administration has an impeccable record before the Supreme Court because we comply with the law. We do not disobey judicial rulings.”
National Security Analysis
The confrontation underscores a sharp escalation in political rhetoric in Washington. Trump’s direct accusation of sedition against sitting members of Congress is unprecedented in modern U.S. history. Analysts warn that invoking the death penalty in this context could heighten tensions between the executive branch and the legislature, with potential implications for military discipline and constitutional stability.
