Trump Suspends Tariffs on Cooperative Countries for 90 Days and Increases Tariffs on China to 125%
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday a strategic move to suspend the imposition of tariffs on countries that have not retaliated against his administration's trade policies for 90 days. At the same time, he unveiled a drastic increase in the tariffs imposed on China, raising them to an unprecedented 125%
Through his Truth Social platform, Trump explained that this decision follows negotiations with over 75 countries that have shown a willingness to engage with Washington and have not taken retaliatory actions against the U.S. “I have authorized a 90-day PAUSE and a substantial reduction in the reciprocal tariff during this period, by 10%, effective immediately,” he stated.
The president also reaffirmed his stance on China, claiming that the Asian nation has shown disrespect toward international markets. As a result, Trump decided to increase tariffs to an astounding 125%, up from the previous 104%, emphasizing that China must understand that its past practice of taking advantage of the U.S. and other nations is no longer acceptable. “At some point, hopefully soon, China will realize that the days of exploiting the U.S. and the rest of the world are over,” Trump wrote.
This announcement coincides with the implementation of new reciprocal tariffs, which include an additional 50% penalty on China, raising the total tariffs to 104%. Additionally, a 20% tariff was established on the European Union, among other adjustments.
In response, the Chinese government quickly retaliated, imposing measures that match the U.S. tariffs at 104%, and reaffirmed its willingness to respond firmly to any further economic or trade actions that Washington decides to intensify.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt emphasized in a brief statement to the press that Trump’s policy remains clear: "When someone strikes the U.S., the president strikes back harder."
