Trump Threatens Tariffs on Nations Supplying Oil to Cuba; Havana Accuses Washington of “Blackmail and Coercion”

Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to impose tariffs on any country that delivers oil to Cuba, escalating his administration’s pressure campaign against the communist government of the island.

The measure, authorized through an executive order, declared a national emergency but did not specify tariff rates or identify particular nations that could be targeted. The order, titled “Addressing the Threats Posed by the Government of Cuba to the United States,” asserts that Cuba’s “policies, practices, and actions” represent an “extraordinary and unusual threat” to U.S. national security.

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez swiftly condemned the move, calling it “a new escalation by the United States against Cuba.” He dismissed Trump’s accusations as “a long list of lies intended to portray Cuba as a threat that it is not.”

In a statement posted on X, Rodríguez accused Washington of attempting to “impose its dictates, strip nations of their resources, mutilate their sovereignty, and deprive them of independence,” referring to what he described as efforts to dominate “Nuestra América,” or “Our America.”

The announcement marks the latest step in Trump’s hardline stance toward Havana, which has faced tightening U.S. sanctions in recent years. Analysts say the threat of tariffs could further strain relations with countries that maintain energy ties to Cuba, while intensifying the island’s economic challenges.
