Trump Jokes About Pearl Harbor: “Who Knows More About Surprise Attacks Than Japan?”

During a press briefing on Thursday, President Donald Trump sparked controversy when asked why he had not informed allies such as Japan about his intention to strike Iran. His response included a pointed joke referencing the infamous World War II attack on Pearl Harbor.

“One thing is, you don’t want to reveal too much. You know, when we go in, we go in with great force, and we didn’t tell anyone because we wanted the element of surprise,” Trump said during a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in the Oval Office.

“Who knows more about surprise attacks than Japan?” Trump added. “Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor? Okay?”

The president’s remarks came nearly three weeks after he ordered the first U.S. strike against Iran, a decision that has heightened tensions across the Middle East and raised questions among allies about coordination and communication.

Trump’s reference evoked the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, when Japanese forces killed more than 2,400 Americans in a surprise assault on the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Hawaii. The attack propelled the United States into World War II, with President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously declaring it “a date which will live in infamy.”
