The United States government has suspended all asylum decisions, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced Friday, following President Donald Trump’s order to “stop” immigration from “third world countries” in the wake of Wednesday’s shooting in Washington, D.C.
“USCIS has suspended all asylum decisions until we can ensure that every foreign national is inspected and verified at the highest possible level. The safety of the American people always comes first,” USCIS Director Joseph B. Edlow stated on X.
According to the American Immigration Council (AIC), nearly 1.5 million asylum applications were pending as of December 2024.
The USCIS order came just hours after Trump vowed to permanently halt migration “from all third world countries” following the attack, in which an Afghan national allegedly opened fire on members of the National Guard in Washington, killing one officer and critically injuring another.
On Thursday, USCIS had already announced a “rigorous review” of permanent resident cards (green cards) issued to migrants from 19 “countries of concern,” including Afghanistan, Cuba, Venezuela, and Haiti.
The agency also confirmed the suspension of Afghan migration requests on Wednesday, minutes after Trump’s national address blaming the immigration policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden (2021–2025), for allowing the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, to enter the country and carry out the attack.
During Biden’s administration, the U.S. admitted more than 100,000 refugees in 2024, the highest number in 30 years. One of Trump’s first measures in office was to freeze the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), marking a sharp reversal in refugee policy.
