Washington D.C. / New York — In a rare and dramatic move, the U.S. Department of State announced on Friday, September 27, the revocation of Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s diplomatic visa following controversial remarks he made during a pro-Palestinian protest in New York.

Petro publicly called on U.S. soldiers to defy orders from President Donald Trump, as part of his proposal to create a multinational “salvation army” to intervene in Gaza.

Controversial Remarks Spark Diplomatic Fallout

Speaking through a megaphone at a rally in Times Square, where he appeared alongside British musician Roger Waters, Petro addressed U.S. military personnel directly:

“From here, from New York, I ask all soldiers of the U.S. Army to disobey Trump’s orders. I ask you not to aim your rifles against humanity.”

The U.S. State Department responded swiftly, issuing a statement on social media platform X:

“Earlier today, Colombian President Gustavo Petro stood on a New York street and urged U.S. soldiers to disobey orders and incite violence. Due to these reckless and incendiary actions, we are revoking Petro’s visa.”

Petro’s Proposal at the United Nations

Petro defended his remarks as part of a humanitarian initiative. In his address to the 80th United Nations General Assembly, he proposed the creation of an international armed force under the UN’s “Uniting for Peace” mechanism, which allows the General Assembly to authorize military action when the Security Council is deadlocked.

“Nations that vote in favor of this resolution will bear the responsibility of forming this pioneering global unit with their armies, to enforce the rulings of international justice,” Petro stated.

Indonesia has expressed preliminary support for the initiative, though no formal military commitments have been made.

Diplomatic Implications

The revocation of Petro’s visa marks a significant deterioration in U.S.-Colombia relations, historically strong allies in security, trade, and anti-narcotics cooperation. The move may restrict Petro’s future official visits to the U.S. and complicate bilateral coordination in international forums.
