Washington Toughens Its Stance: Trump Issues Trade Ultimatum to Russia

In a surprising shift in foreign policy, U.S. President Donald Trump warned Monday that he will impose 100% tariffs on Russia if a peace agreement in Ukraine is not reached within 50 days.

During a meeting in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump expressed growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over stalled negotiations. “I’m very displeased with Russia,” said the president, who until recently had taken a more conciliatory tone toward Moscow.

In parallel, Trump confirmed the deployment of Patriot missile systems to Ukraine, emphasizing that the cost would be covered by European nations. “We manufacture the weapons, but they pay for them,” he said, reaffirming his intent to maintain military support without draining U.S. resources.

The 50-day ultimatum marks a turning point in Trump’s strategy, following campaign promises to resolve the conflict “in a single day.” The threat of massive economic sanctions could reshape the geopolitical landscape, forcing Russia and its partners to reevaluate their positions.
