Bogotá, September 11, 2025 — After more than eight decades of anticipation, Bogotá welcomed the first six cars of its long-awaited metro system early Thursday morning, marking a milestone in the city's public transportation history. The convoy, part of the first train for Line 1, arrived at the Bosa Yard and Workshop after a 1,200-kilometer journey from the port of Cartagena.
A Monumental Transfer
The transport operation began on September 5, when the cars—manufactured in China and shipped to Colombia—were moved overland from Cartagena to Bogotá. The convoy was escorted by units from the National Army, Police, and Navy, in a carefully coordinated effort that maintained speeds between 15 and 30 km/h to ensure the safety of the oversized cargo.
As the train passed through various departments and municipalities, it sparked excitement among residents. In Funza, for instance, the local fire department sounded its sirens to welcome the convoy.
Reception in the country: Civic Pride and Institutional Presence
The train entered the Bosa Yard at 1:34 a.m., greeted by a celebratory atmosphere. Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán, Metro de Bogotá CEO Leonidas Narváez, and Mobility Secretary Claudia Díaz were present to mark the occasion, highlighting the progress of a project that has now surpassed 61% completion.
“After more than 80 years of waiting, we welcome the transportation system that will transform mobility and the lives of millions,” said Claudia Díaz.
Technical Specs and Timeline
Each train consists of six cars, stretching 134 meters in total and capable of carrying up to 1,800 passengers. The system will be fully electric and automated, featuring a 24-kilometer elevated viaduct and 16 stations integrated with the city’s Integrated Public Transport System (SITP).
Static testing will begin at the Bosa Yard, with dynamic testing scheduled for 2026. Commercial operations for Line 1 are expected to launch in March 2028.
Projected Impact
The metro is expected to serve over 800,000 passengers daily, with trains running every 90 seconds. Commutes that currently take up to two hours could be reduced to just 27 minutes, dramatically reshaping urban mobility in Bogotá.
